What Is a Child Psychologist?
A child psychologist is a mental health professional who specializes in the care and treatment of children and adolescents. The term “children” refers to individuals from tots to teens. These experts are qualified to assess, address, and provide support for various concerns related to children.
For Mental and Physical Concerns
A child’s problems may be psychological or emotional in nature, but can also be related to physical, social, or relational factors. The child therapist aims to identify the underlying cause of the problem.
There may be tension within the family or at school, or significant recent changes in the child’s life. A child psychologist can also make diagnoses, for example, for developmental disorders such as ADHD and autism, or psychological issues such as depression and trauma.
Your Child is At The Center
During therapy, the child is placed at the center of the process as much as possible. Through conversations and activities, the child therapist and the child work together to understand where problems are occurring and why.
Questionnaires and other psychodiagnostic tools can also be used. When necessary, parents or caregivers are involved in the therapy. As a parent, you can always turn to the child therapist for advice.
The Role of a Child Psychologist
Growing up is not always easy. That’s why children and adolescents can also turn to a psychologist for support, whether they are dealing with behavioral issues, learning difficulties, or other developmental challenges.
A child psychologist has completed postgraduate specialization and is, therefore, an expert in the field of child and youth psychology. Parents or caregivers can also reach out to a child therapist with their questions.
This includes providing emotional support, dealing with behavioral issues, evaluating and addressing developmental concerns, dealing with teenage angst, and much, much more. A child psychologist can also act as a mediator and bridge between the child and caregiver, helping them to understand each other better, strengthen their relationship, and overcome challenges together.
Why Seeing a Therapist Can Make the Difference
Children generally tend to be more comfortable in an environment they know and feel safe in, so online sessions do a fantastic job of making your child feel at ease as quickly as possible, allowing the important work to start. The fact that we don’t have any waiting lists also helps lessen those sleepless nights filled with concern for your child.
When to See a Child Psychologist?
While your child is growing up, many things can turn out differently than expected. Both physically and mentally, problems can arise that affect the whole family. You can contact a child therapist for various concerns regarding your child’s development, such as:
- Your child is suddenly very active and restless or is experiencing frequent tantrums.
- Your child has become unusually quiet, gloomy, anxious, or is worrying a lot.
- Your child is having problems with eating or sleeping.
- Your child is struggling with concentration and performing less well at school.
- You have questions about your child’s upbringing or development.
Through age-appropriate treatment, your child will get the ultimate advantage in life. Your child will become more aware of their emotions and develop self-awareness. By teaching children healthy coping strategies and other essential life skills, such as setting boundaries and effective communication, from a young age, they are equipped with the tools needed to become well-adjusted and resilient adults.
A Safe Place to Share
A child psychologist can also serve as a safe outlet where your child can release pent-up emotions or share events or situations they may not feel comfortable discussing with others. This type of “unburdening” has been proven to be invaluable to one’s mental well-being. And if you’re struggling to connect or understand your child, a child psychologist can be your gateway to your child’s inner world, promoting stronger and healthier relationships.
So, open the door to early detection and intervention, and allow a professional to guide you through mental, emotional, or behavioral challenges.
Meet Our Child Psychologists:
How Does a Child Psychologist Work?
A child psychologist is skilled at building rapport and a trusting relationship with a child. Without causing any unnecessary discomfort or placing undue pressure, they are able to talk to the child and use various other methods, such as standardized tests (for older children), to gather information and gain a deeper understanding of the child’s history, family dynamics, friendships, school environment, and so on.
Various Treatment Plans
If any areas of concern have been identified, a custom treatment plan will be developed using various methods and approaches tailored to the specific concerns, circumstances, and the child’s personality, age, and other relevant factors. This could include play therapy, EFT, CBT, EMDR and other methods.
If the child psychologist identifies any other concerns regarding developmental or psychological disorders, they will also seek the help of other experts.
What Occurs During a Session?
A session with a psychologist will vary slightly depending on the child’s age. For younger children, the therapist will first hold sessions with the parents regarding their concerns. Thereafter, they will begin having sessions with the child, with the parent(s) still sitting in on the sessions until the child is comfortable enough to have them alone.
For older children, parental involvement is not as extensive, and one-on-one sessions with the child can begin from day one. During these sessions, the concerns will be discussed and addressed in an age-appropriate way.
In the case of minor children, feedback sessions will be held with the parents during which treatment plans and the revision thereof will be discussed. Therapeutic methods can also vary greatly depending on the child’s age.
How an Online Psychologist Can Help
A psychologist can teach your child how to regulate their emotions better and help them process any unresolved feelings they may be struggling with. If your child has experienced a traumatic event, therapy can be a safe space to work through these experiences. Therapy also teaches children valuable life skills such as effective communication, problem-solving, and social skills.
Developing Coping Strategies
And by equipping children with healthy coping strategies, they’ll be able to handle life’s challenges more resiliently. Sessions can boost a child’s self-esteem and confidence, which are essential for healthy development. Additionally, a therapist can help repair, rebuild, and strengthen the parent-child relationship.
Adress Behavioural Issues
A child psychologist will also be able to identify and address behavioral issues early on, thereby preventing them from worsening. By teaching children to be introspective from a young age, it also encourages them to be more mindful and self-aware, fostering emotional intelligence and personal growth. Not just now, but also as they grow.

Introductory Meeting With a Child Psychologist
If you are concerned, you are welcome to make an appointment for an intake session with a child therapist. The child therapist will look at the child’s entire situation and work to identify what is going on. Attention will also be given to the parents, any siblings, or other family members, the child’s so-called “system.” In consultation with the parents or caregivers, it will be determined in which areas extra help or support is needed.
Can this be done online? Absolutely. In fact, for many children and families, therapy from home is the more practical option. An online child therapist is also an ideal solution for families living abroad.
An introductory meeting is always free of charge and without obligation. Please feel free to contact us for more information about what our child psychologist can do for your child.

FAQ About a Child Psychologist:
A child psychologist can be helpful from a very young age, with children as young as two having benefited from sessions. The approach and treatment methods used will be customized and adjusted to be age-appropriate and tailored to the child's developmental stage.
With younger children, a parent will often need to be present, especially since sessions are online. With older children, a parent usually attends for the first couple of sessions till the child feels comfortable being alone in the presence of the child psychologist. For teens, there is no need for a parent to attend unless specifically requested and all parties agree.
There is absolutely no way of knowing whether a child will be medicated before a thorough evaluation and assessment has been done, and it will always be the aim to treat any mental health concerns without relying on medical intervention. If it is found that medication is needed, a child psychologist cannot prescribe any medication and will have to seek the assistance of one of our psychiatrists.
A child psychologist only sees your child for an hour or two a week; you see them every day. The psychologist will have many things that will require your implementation at home, along with your support for your child.
For smaller children, a psychologist will provide general insights and information. However, the bigger the child, the more confidentiality and trust come into play, and the less a therapist will share with parents without the explicit consent from the child.
